Doctors Using 0844 Phone Numbers

Many people in Earley have complained about local GPs using 0844 telephone numbers. The Government investigated the problem and introduced a ban of more expensive numbers in 2010.

NHS GPs were given a year to make arrangements and to stop using such numbers with a final deadline of March 2011.

Two local GP practices, Parkside and Woodley Health Centre, abandoned 0844 numbers last year but Brookside Group Practice in Lower Earley has continued to use 0844, in breach of its NHS contract, despite enormous criticism and distress for patients.

The Earley NAG deplores this situation and has appealed to Brookside, NHS Berkshire West and Wokingham Borough Council to take action. Sadly no action has been forthcoming.

Earley NAG has asked Brookside to make its normal 0118 geographic numbers alongside the 0844 as a compromise. Brookside has refused to compromise.

Consequently Earley NAG has decided to make the 0118 numbers available so that local Earley patients may have a choice of which numbers they would prefer to use.
